چکیده

Van Slyke and Folch (1) used as a combustion mixture a solution of H&04, HsP04, and CrOa, to which pulverized KI03 was added in the combustion tube. It has been found advantageous instead to use as a fluid a mixture of H&S04 and HsPOa without CrOs, both KI03 and KzCrzOr being added in solid form in the combustion tube. This modification has the advantage that both the liquid and the solid reagents are stable (the original CrOrc solution weakened slowly on standing) and that manipulation of the caustic CrOa solution is avoided. Also, the modification outlined below, with increased KI03:K2Crz01 ratio, for carbohydrates and polyhydroxyl alcohols has yielded results more consistently approaching 100 per cent of theoretical with these substances.

An improved procedure for the determination of carbon in organic compounds in aqueous solution.

The rapid semi-micro determination of carbon by wet combustion of organic compounds (Van Slyke & Folch, 1940) has been subjected to various modifications, principally in the apparatus used (McCready & Hassid, 1942; Hockenhull, 1950). The apparatus is shown in Fig. 1, and is essentially that described by Hockenhull (1946; and personal communication), using the spiral bubbler modified from that o...

Influence of temperature on inhibition of Micrococcus pyogenes by chloramphenicol.

assay of Keilin and Hartree (Biochem. J. (London), 42, 230, 1948) was used to measure initial and residual sugar in the carbon balance studies. Total carbon was determined by the wet carbon oxidation method (Van Slyke et al., J. Biol. Chem., 191, 299, 1951), and carbon assimilation into polysaccharide and cellular material was estimated from wet carbon oxidation of the culture samples after dia...

Colorimetric determination of blood lipides.

Extraction-As the oxidation is essentially non-specific, the plasma extract must be as free of non-lipide reducing substances as possible. All solvents should be tested occasionally for reducing residues remaining after evaporation, and redistilled if necessary. Ether should be maintained peroxide-free. The determinations reported here followed a conventional alcohol-ether extraction and subseq...

A Micromethod for the Determination of Carbon Dioxide in Blood and Other Fluids

Christensen and Facer (1) have devised an apparatus and procedure for the microdetermination of carbon and hydrogen in organic compounds by a wet combustion process in which the evolved carbon dioxide is absorbed in standard barium hydroxide. The apparatus used for the determination is based on the principle of Pettenkopfer (cf. (2)) in which the carbon dioxide is drawn into an evacuated vessel...

A Method for the Determination of Cyclopro- Pane, Ethylene, and Nitrous Oxide in Blood with the Van Slyke-neill Manometric Apparatus*

The dctcrmination of anesthetic gases in blood taken from patients during anesthesia has been reported in several instances (l-3). In each case, however, reservation has been made as to the accuracy of the results because of errors in the vacuum extraction method. The principal source of error has been that the volume of gas determined was not corrected for unextracted gas. This technical diffi...
